Network Slicing is a key architectural feature in 5G, enabling multiple virtual networks to be created on a single physical network infrastructure. Different service characteristics and quality parameters can then be provided to each slice, adapted to customer needs with full isolation between slices. In this workshop with representatives from Deutsche Telekom and its partners Ericsson and Samsung, we look at the business and technology aspects of Network Slicing, the unique collaboration with Ericsson and Samsung and show the benefits of latency-optimized slicing for cloud VR streaming games.

Dr. Nico Bayer is lead architect for NW slicing architecture at Deutsche Telekom. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from City University London, UK, in 2009. From 2003 to 2008 he worked for T-Systems Enterprise Services. Prior to that, Nico worked at Telekom Innovation Laboratories. He is now working in the Technology Innovation area at DT, focusing on 5G and network slicing technologies. From 2017 to 2019 he was chairman of the Network Slicing Taskforce within the GSMA.

Dr. Richard J. Weiler works in Deutsche Telekom’s Technology and Innovation board area, where he currently leads the activities on business development and productization of network slicing. He is particularly interested in driving technology towards new products that help improve the customers’ businesses. Previously, Richard worked at Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and graduated from TU Berlin as Doctor of Engineering, focusing on communication networks.

Dr.Changsoon Choi is VP of Deutsche Telekom, leading innovation and transformation in 5G E2E infrastructure, 5G network slicing, QoS, and more. Prior to DT, Choi led 5G commercialization and developing 5G end-to-end networks in SK Telecom. His industry experience also includes affiliations with NTT DOCOMO communication laboratories Europe, the Leibniz Institute Innovation for High Performance Microelectronics, and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technologies, Japan.

Ludger Verhaag works as Senior Product Manager in the Product Innovation & Customer Experience unit of Deutsche Telekom. Dr. Dan Warren is Director of Advanced Network Research at Samsung Research UK. He leads a team of researchers working on cutting-edge mobile telecoms technology innovation in the area of 5G, beyond 5G and the application of AI.  Dan is currently chair of the steering board of the European Commission 5G-PPP, a board member of 5GIA and a member of a number of external advisory boards for academic research projects. Dan previously held senior roles at Capita, GSMA, Vodafone and Nortel.
